超過40年的搖滾歷練，艾力克萊普頓贏得了18座葛萊美獎的喝采，他是史上唯一以3個樂團或歌手的身份入列「搖滾名人殿堂」的搖滾歌手，他在1960年代初期就與日後的吉他英雄 Jimmy Page / 吉米佩吉、日後變成齊柏林飛船樂團的大將、Jeff Beck / 傑夫貝克在 The Yardbirds 樂團中過招，隨後轉進匯集了藍調搖滾豪傑的超級樂團 John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers，然後再接連組成 Cream / 奶油樂團、Blind Faith / 盲目信仰樂團等超級搖滾天團，還穿梭於披頭四、滾石合唱團、巴布狄倫、吉米罕醉克斯的專輯錄音或是現場演出。

自1970年代起，艾力克萊普頓開始獨闖高手如雲的搖滾叢林，陸續以 "Layla"、"I Shot The Sheriff"、"Lay Down Sally"、"Wonderful Tonight" 等暢銷單曲揚威樂壇。進入90年代後，他走過吸毒的幽谷，還有喪子的陰霾，以 "Tears In Heaven"、"Change The World" 兩度拿下葛萊美3項大獎，還以不插電演唱專輯【Unplugged】狂銷千萬張。跨越21世紀後，仍藉由與藍調國寶 B.B. King、吉他傳奇 J. J. Cale 等藝人的專輯合作持續榮耀搖滾樂的歷史。
